Farming is used to plant, grow, and harvest Crops, including Food, reagents, and raw cloth.
Seeds are found at Farmer NPCs or gathered from planted crops.
Usage
A crop seed can be planted in any fertile land. After planting, crops move through 3 further stages: Sprouted, Ripe, and Desiccated. The plant must be watered in each stage (including freshly planted) or it will progress immediately to the Desiccated stage. Each phase will last an amount of time varying based on the crop, though the Ripe phase always lasts much longer than the others.
During the Ripe phase, you can use your farming skill on a crop to gather its seeds. You can also harvest a ripe crop, removing the plant and adding the item to your backpack. Seeds cannot be gathered from a harvested plant, but a crop with its seeds gathered can still be harvested.
Farming skill can also be used to command animals to move.

Differences from Ultima Online
The Herding skill wasn't capable of anything beyond making creatures move.
