Before starting:
So you have finished installation and now wants to play. Before that, make sure you run the Teiravon3.exe application and click "Play" in order to update all your files (art files, animations etc, basically you will download the custom stuff).
Once it is completed, you can click "Play" again to go to the Login window. That is a more "vanilla experience". If you prefer, you can download a third party program called "Razor" which facilitates many utilities in the game, from which you can run the client. I might write a Razor guide in the future, for now it's enough that you know it exists:
Creating an account & logging in:
On Teiravon 3, you create your account as you go, upon your first login. Simply type the account name and password you'd like in the first window, click the green arrow in the bottom right and your account is created.
On the next window, click on the server's name: Teiravon 3...
Aaand you are logged in! But you have no characters to play with yet, so let's get to that.
Creating a character concept:
This is where the fun begins.
As you well know, Teiravon is a Roleplaying UO shard, that means you pretend to be your character 100% of the time in-game. That means the choices you make in the character creation will affect your character throughout the game: his behaviour, personality, traits, flaws...
In order to create a character that satisfies your playstyle and accomodates the world lore, I will brief you in quickly before we move on. If you're in a hurry to play and check out the game, skip this topic for now, but I highly recommend returning to it later on.
The world of Teiravon 3 is a political one. Most of the Mainland is ruled by an Empire called 'Terimere', which was founded by the elves about 500 years ago, as an attempt to experiment with the races (more on that later). The capital of the Empire is 'Alcarin', where most players spend their time, however there are also several towns scattered all over the world. Each of those towns has a history of its own, which helps shape the story of those who originate from them. And some of these towns are a part of the Empire, whereas some are not. When you create your character, you get to pick your race and your starting town.
There are 5 races in Teiravon 3 that co-exist in the world: elves, dwarves, humans, orcs and sprites. During the course of the world's history, these races had groups separate from the whole and move elsewhere, generating different cultures. They are:
Humans = Imperial Humans (Tenrimere) / Frontier Humans (Drochmor)
Elves = Celestial Elves / Terrestrial Elves / Sidereal Elves
Orcs = KeenEdge Orcs / Longtusk Orcs / Bloodrage Orcs
Dwarves = Mountain Dwarves / City Dwarves / Deep Dwarves
Sprites = Imps / Goblins / Gnomes / Fae
Before choosing your race, I strongly recommend reading this post here as it contains useful lore information on each race.
Now, how does that translates into mechanics in the game?
Creating a character:
After clicking on Teiravon 3 server, if this is your first time, you will go straight to UO Character Creation window. This part is really irrelevant and you can pick any option, as later on you will get to the Teiravon char creation room.
On the next window, however, you have to input some important information: your character's name and appearance. If you intend to play a race which is not human, don't worry. The game itself will convert your paperdoll once you pick your race. And if you change your mind, you can modify your hair / beard style and color later on in-game.
When you are done, click the green arrow in the bottom right. This will take you into the Teiravon char creation room. This is where you pick your race and starting town.
Walk over to the 'Character Creation stone' and double click on it. If you're totally new to UO, to walk you hold down the right mouse button and guide your character with the icon. Once you d-click on the stone, you are given the race options.
Now if you've already read the Lore about the races, let's take a look at the actual mechanics behind the system. Your chosen race will affect two things: how some of your stats develop when leveling up and the towns you can choose from, since not all races can originate from every city. It would make no sense for Celestial Elves to live in a place like The Pit, for example. This is important because each race and each culture have abilities associated with them.
For more information on that, check this link here. It is strongly recommended you read the perks of each race and town before choosing.
If all this sounded quite confusing, I will give you a personal example. One of my characters is a sidereal elf. Being an elf, he has the elven racial ability to speak the secret handsign language, that only elves can understand. And his culture is 'Sidereal'. Sidereal Elves can originate from two places: 'The Pit' and 'Underveil'. I chose 'The Pit', its perk being 'attacks drain extra stamina'. Had I chosen 'Underveil', then the perk would be something else entirely.
From the combination of your race and cuture, comes your Ethos. Ethos is yet another free ability, based on your race and culture background. You will learn these abilities passively as you level up. The charts listing races, cultures and ethos abilities are in the link provided above.
So, now that you know what your race and culture do, it is time to pick your city!
After choosing both your race and origin, you will be placed in your starting town. Welcome to Teiravon! You can see a complete list of commands by typing ]help.
Your character is currently level 0, but you start with 1 level to distribute. This means you have 1 level to spend in one of the 6 classes. To do so, type ]level and the level up window will pop-up.
From left to right, the icons represent: Archer, Cleric, Barbarian, Fighter, Mage and Rogue. So let's talk about the Class System a bit. In Teiravon 3, you level up by acquiring experience points. You can gain exp from several sources: killing monsters, crafting, questing, GM ran events and ]nod (you'll learn about ]nod soon enough, don't worry about it for now). Once you level up, you can spend that level in any way you desire, in one of the classes available.
Every class has stats and skills associated with them. For example, spending levels in Mage will grant you Magery skill and high Intelligence stat. Spending levels in Rogue will grant you Stealth and high Dexterity, And so on. The level cap is 30, meaning you can not level up beyond that. Which means you can mix and match as you want, but you can never go past 30. So choose wisely. A jack-of-all-trades is a master of none.
Multi-classing is possible. You can build any class combination you like, or try a prestige class. Prestige classes are unlocked when you spend 10 levels in a primary class and 5 levels in a secondary class, then the related Prestige class icon becomes available in the ]level up gump. For example, if you spend 10 levels in Mage and 5 levels in Fighter, you unlock the prestige class 'Runeblade', and is now eligible to spend levels in it. From the combinations between the 6 base classes, a total of 30 prestige classes are possible.
Additionally, every 5 levels spent in a class grants you a class ability (aka feats). For example, the Rank 1 feat for Fighter 5 is 'Armour Proficiency'. If you'd like to get the Rank 2 feat, you would have to level Fighter up to 10.
Therefore, your classes determine your stats, skills and feats. You can find a class chart with all possible prestige class combinations in the link I provided above. Moreover, you can play around with classes in the character builder. Click the link, distribute levels and see the results to the right. Spending 10 levels in a class and 5 in another, will show the related prestige class. You can click on each class name to check out their feats.
With that in mind, you can select your first class and start exploring the world. Below, I will add some more useful basic information. I hope this guide has helped you create your character and understand some of the systems.
Basic Game Info & Tips:
- Usually, adventurers leave their home towns early and head to the capital of the Empire, 'Alcarin'. There are several reasons for that. Alcarin is the only city in Teiravon with a bank, a perk of the civilized world. That is also where you will find most players to interact with, since it is also the largest city, with a huge amount of houses for rental, whereas the starting towns only have some, for the nostalgic few who won't leave their roots. Alcarin also has all NPC shops available.
- Every character also has access to 'Common Skills'. These are available to everyone, no matter their class, and must be trained the classic way: through use. This includes all crafting skills and most utility ones as well. The total cap for Common Skills is 300, while the individual cap is 100.
- You can get your very first levels by killing animals. They don't pose much of a threat and are everywhere.
- Quester NPCs can also give you exp points for simple tasks in the capital.
